As a professor, researcher, and lifelong advocate for literature and culture, I've always believed in the power of connection. My journey has led me to a profound appreciation for the wisdom and resilience of our elders. Beyond academic pursuits at SSM College (where I served as Professor and Head of Department), my passion lies in translating knowledge into tangible action, empowering seniors within our community to live fulfilling and dignified lives.
Filling a Critical Gap: Holistic Support for Elders
Many organizations tirelessly work in the social field, yet often face resource constraints. I strive to address this gap by providing holistic support to elderly individuals, recognizing their unique needs and challenges. This support encompasses Financial Assistance and Job Opportunities: We work to connect elders with opportunities that not only provide financial security but also foster a sense of purpose and self-worth.Combating Isolation Through Community Engagement: Loneliness can be detrimental to mental and physical health. Regular visits, conversations with students and friends, birthday celebrations, and cultural programs (poetry readings, dance performances, etc.) are essential to building connections and fostering a sense of belonging. Many elder women in India coming from economically challenges communities end up never setting their foot away from their homes or places of work. One such city-wide tours to old and new land-marks which till date were un-reachable for them expands their world-view and embellishes new meaning to their existence. Nutritional Support: Providing nutritious food is paramount to ensuring their physical well-being.Support for Organizations Addressing Mental Health Challenges: Collaborating with public health experts and providing support to organizations that assist elders facing mental health challenges, particularly those experiencing memory loss and identity crises.
Moments of Joy, Moments of Impact
The programs I coordinate are driven by a simple principle: creating moments of joy and connection. Some of the activities that bring the most satisfaction include: Birthday Celebrations: Making each elder feel seen, cherished, and remembered on their special day. Intergenerational Dialogue: Facilitating meaningful conversations between students, community members, and elders, fostering mutual understanding and respect.Cultural Programs: Sharing the beauty of Marathi literature, music, and dance, rekindling memories and providing a sense of cultural pride.Providing Comfort and Support: Offering a listening ear, a helping hand, and a sense of companionship during times of need.
How You Can Get Involved
Supporting our elders is a collective responsibility. Here are a few ways you can contribute through Bodhi Knowledge. Volunteer your time: Visit local senior centers, offer companionship, or assist with activities. Donate : Support organizations like Bodhi Knowledge that provide vital services to seniors, such as meals, transportation, and healthcare. Spread awareness: Advocate for policies and programs that support the well-being of older adults.Connect with elders in your own life: Take the time to listen to their stories, offer your support, and show them that you care.Take an example of my own 82 years old mother who lives a fulfilling life because I have established her as the revered and well-sought elder in our family.
Let's work together to create a community where elders are valued, respected, and empowered to live fulfilling lives. It's an honor to connect with them and it's a mission I intend to continue.
